To be honest, I was apprehensive about the experience of performing online. The concern was that I wouldn’t be able to create the atmosphere for my online audience of little people. That they would lose engagement and interest and wander off away from the screen. After all, with the lure of Netflix, Amazon and Minecraft, how would I be able to compete for their attention? As it turns out, I needn’t have worried. After the first show all my fears abated and the experience of performing online is not so different as shows in the real world. They are still children and children love to laugh. If I performed a show that wasn’t interactive then the experience would be different. But my shows are interactive and jam packed full of engagement. This is the secret! Kids love to create and feel that they are part of something fun and creative!
Children have had to curb their socialising. This is as hard on them as it is for adults. One of the benefits of a zoom show is that they LOVE seeing each other online! Not only that, they LOVE the shared experience of participating in a magic show. They adore being able to join in with magic words, actions, calling out and there is LOTS of LAUGHTER. For children that are suffering as much as adults adapting to exist in this new normal society, this is a joy. LAUGHTER is good medicine. It lifts the spirits and is good for the soul.
My online magic show for children is not sitting and watching. It is engaging, creating and participating. Not only that, because I am working from my home studio my own step-kids are getting involved behind the scenes too! Now that really is magic!
